Disability Affairs Unit

ECSU has been handling the issue of disability fragmentally since its commencement. However, considering sensitivity of the issues raised, the University decided to manage disability affairs consistently. To this effect, Desk for Students with Disabilities was established under the then Center for Gender and Development (CGAD) in 2013. After two years, the Desk was moved to the Guidance and Counseling Office (GCO) of the University. Based on the experiences learned from both CGAD and GCO and the magnitude of disability issues the University identified the need to establish a separate unit that will work on disability issues with a better width and depth. Hence, it is with this intention that ESCU established DAU in February 2016 under the Center for Cross Cutting Issues for Training and Consultancy (CCCITC).

DAU serves as a focal unit for the University’s community on issues related to disability matters. The Unit is striving to maximize the productivity and wellbeing of staff and students with disability through training, consultancy research and community outreach activities. The unit promotes the development and sustainability of disability friendly working and learning environment by working in collaboration with different stakeholders of the University.

The Unit of Disability Affairs is responsible to:

  • Serve as a focal place for the university community.
  • Promote friendly environment to students with disability through research and consultancy.
  • Reduce attrition rate of students with disability by providing and/ or facilitating tutorials and other supports.
  • Address the psychosocial needs of students with disability through individual and group counseling.
  • Provide short term trainings to students, academic and admin staff on issues related to disability.
  • Raise ECSU community’s awareness on disability by developing and disseminating Information, Education and Communication (IEC) materials like brochures, leaflets and posters.
  • Promote wellbeing and success of students with disability in collaboration with other institutes, centers and departments of the university.
  • Strengthen the Disability Club and work with it on planned and emerging issues.
  • Lead the management of change in the unit.
