Purpose Statement and Brief Profile of HAMU

The University established HIV/AIDS Management Unit (HAMU), accountable to the office of the president. The purpose of establishing HAMU as a management support service unit is for institutionalizing and coordinating all HIV/AIDS related trainings, research, education, consultancy services. Ultimately, the goal of ECSU(through HAMU) is to contribute its share in problem solving research, trainings, and the enhancement of the national/sectoral fight against HIV and AIDS in the country geared towards ensuring the achievement of Millennium Development Goals(MDGs).

HAMU envisages seeing AIDS free and competent staff, student and civil servant that will contribute to the national development. Its values include sensitivity to gender, commitment, effective mainstreaming, partnership, accountability, responsibility, fairness, transparency, innovation, community engagement and participation.

HAMU’s duty and responsibility is to promote leadership capability of effectively mainstreaming HIV&AIDS programs and the availability/accessibility of HIV/AIDS prevention, care and support services to the clients (ECSU community). Moreover, HAMU strives to contribute towards the realization of the vision, mission of ECSU, National and MDGs of promoting sustainable development in the country through mainstreaming of Gender sensitive HIV& AIDS management programs.

  • To serve as a focal place for sensitization, listening, negotiation and counseling about HIV prevention and contribute to the achievement of ECSU goals/mission as well as the National and MDGs;
  • To contribute to responding to the epidemic through participatory and civil service reform programs sensitive planning, implementation, M&E of mainstreaming HIV/AIDS management interventions into trainings, education, research & consultancy services of the University and beyond
  • To coordinate, enhance and ensure curricula and extra-curricula mainstreaming of gender sensitive HIV&AIDS management interventions in the University activities;
  • To promote universal access to HIV prevention, care, guidance, consulting, counseling, social support and treatment to the needy community of ECSU through streamlining, referral linkages and task shifting participatory strategies;
  • To play leadership role in developing/strengthening partnership & collaborations for resource, community or social mobilization, and create synergy with relevant stakeholders, team up and encourage vibrant participation of the ECSU organs and community;
  • To develop or organize and distribute up-to-date, relevant and reliable IEC/ BCC publications to the students, staff, the public sector community at large.
