Ethiopian Civil Service University Has Won UNPS Award!

Ethiopian Civil Service University has won the United Nations Public Service Award in category five, which is ¨ Promoting Gender-Responsive Delivery of Public Service¨. The university`s project has been selected from a range of projects from African Region, one of the five regions which the United Nations Public Administration Programme categorized. The process has taken quite some time and the university’s Gender and Development Center has availed all the necessary documents for their consideration, which helped the University win the contest. According to United Nations Public Administration Programme, the United Nations Public Service Awards is the most prestigious international recognition of excellence in public service. It rewards the creative achievements and contributions of public service institutions that lead to a more effective and responsive public administration in countries world wide.

The award will be given in the UN Public Service Day ceremony and forum which will be held from 24-27 June 2013, at Manama, Kingdom of Bahrain.

According to Abay Akemachew, Head of Center for Gender and Development, the Ethiopian Civil Service University has presented three of its initiatives which are designed to enhance the competence of female civil servants. The first initiative is empowering female civil servants through education from emerging regions in alternative admission programme and helping them achieve their goals through different support programmes. These support programmes include, among others, providing different trainings like Time Management, Stress Management, Study Skill, and Communication and Assertiveness skills. The center has also provided experience sharing programme at which female alumnae of the university who came from the emerging regions and hold higher position in the civil service shared their experiences.

South Sudan Government Delegates visited ECSU

 

South Sudan Government delegation paid a short visit to Ethiopian Civil Service University on April 24, 2013.The leader of the delegates said in the occasion that as newly independent nation the government of Sudan is trying to put institutions. His government wants to merge the customs and tax authority as one by the name South Sudan Revenue and Tax Authority. For this purpose they had visited Kenya, Uganda and South Africa, he said. The visit to Ethiopia is a complement to those visits. The delegates in the occasion expressed their interest that the ECSU` s staff give short term trainings to their staff working in tax and revenue areas.

Dr.Hailemichael Abera President of Ethiopian Civil Service University officially welcomed the delegates and gave a brief explanation about establishment, the programmes of the University with special emphasis on the capacity building trainings given to the emerging regions which were deprived of their economic, social and human rights for long time.

HAMU Provides Short term Training to 370 Ministry of Urban development and Construction civil servants

 

may06_05_2013pic5HAMU provided sensitization training to Ministry of Urban development and Construction civil servants on how to mainstream HIV/AIDS interventions on their daily work On April 19, 2013. The one hour sensitization training was offered to 370 civil servants of Ministry of Urban development and construction. Among these participants, eighty two of them women and two hundred eighty eight were men. The training was believed to sensitize the civil servants of the ministry on the risk of the epidemic as the construction sector was identified as one of the most at risk populations on HIV/AIDS. Representatives of the participants said they found the training very beneficial for being an add on to their knowledge on HIV/AIDS, for mainstreaming as well as for further partnership.

HAMU Provides a TOT to 128 Leaders and Members of students’ anti-AIDS club On April 19 and 20, 2013

TOT Training was organized by HAMU as part of its BSC plan. It was facilitated and organized by the unit in two cycles for two days with the objective of enhancing the knowledge, attitudes and improving behaviors/practices of ECSU student community. The ultimate goal of the training was building their capacity to be AIDS competent civil servants when they are here at the University and back to their home or work places of regional states and city governments in Ethiopia. The major topics covered include basics and impacts of HIV/AIDS, policy, strategy public management related issues of responding to the epidemic through mainstreaming, gender and human rights dimension of HIV/AIDS, peer education, life skills, HIV/AIDS and Civil Service, role of civil servants in controlling and mitigating HIV/AIDS in the society and workplaces, etc.

HAMU Provides Training to 40 General Service workers of the University Staff

 

may06_05_2013pic2HIV and AIDS Management Unit of ECSU gave training for Estate and General Service Department workers on April 23, 2013. Training was held for half day and the theme of the training was providing comprehensive knowledge on the basics of HIV/AIDS. The total number of trainees in this training was forty. Among the participants of the training, three of them were male and the rest 37 were females. The training believed to enhance their awareness and the participants are believed to gain comprehensive knowledge on how to prevent themselves from HIV/AIDS .The participants reflected the benefit of this training and suggested that HAMU should provide these important training for the rest of the university community as well as outside the university.
