Description

The implementation of free market oriented economic policy, international human rights standards, and other international standards in Ethiopia; the increasing international, regional and sub-regional roles & responsibilities of the country’s public service institutions, private organizations and legal professionals; and the consequent need for highly qualified international legal experts are the main rationale for launching the program.

The program aims at producing highly skilled experts in international law who can effectively implement, formulate, advice and conduct research according to the new global and regional context and contribute to the national and regional development, and building of democratic system based on rule of law and human rights.

The program mainly focuses on the legal regulations of economic, security, human rights, humanitarian, refuge, IDP, criminal and dispute settlement aspect of international relations. In doing so, it addresses the substantive, procedural and institutional dimensions of the regulations by giving considerable attention to the laws, procedures and institutions of the United Nations, African Union and Ethiopia. Yet, it also gives non-legal introductory knowledge in international relations, diplomacy and Ethiopian foreign policy in order to deepen the knowledge of international law by disclosing, explaining 

Prerequisites & Requirements

To be admitted to this program, a candidate must:

  1. have bachelor degree in law (LLB) from a recognized higher education institution,
  2. be public servant,and
  3. pass entrance examination of the institute.

Exit Level Outcomes

After completing the program, the graduate is able to:

  • Analyze international agreements, principles and rules pertaining to human rights, peace, security, trade, investment, environment, transnational watercourses, dispute settlement and related matters;
  • Explain issues of international relations, diplomacy and Ethiopian foreign policy regarding human rights, peace, security, trade, investment, environment, transnational watercourses, dispute settlements and related matters;
  • Evaluate national policies on human rights, peace, security, trade, investment, environment, transnational watercourses, dispute settlements and related matters vis-à-vis international agreements, principles and rules;
  • Resolve legal issues during negotiation of international agreements pertaining to human rights, peace, security, trade, investment, environment, transnational watercourses, dispute settlements and related matters;
  • Provide advice on international agreements on human rights, peace, security, trade, investment, environment, transnational watercourses, dispute settlements and related matters;
  • Conduct research on contemporary issues relating human rights, peace, security, trade, investment, environment, transnational watercourses, dispute settlements and related matters; and
  • Develop tools for building capacities of practitioners of government on contemporary issues relating to international law of trade, finance, investment, environment, water, human rights, peace, security and related matters.
