Infrastructure Network and Cyber Security Administration

Infrastructure Network and Cyber Security Administration

Description

Vision

Infrastructure Development team will provide reliable  Internet, Intranet, Extranet and Network access including supportable and secure ICT infrastructure facilities to staffs, students, and  trainees any time, any place so that automated service access over the network enhances the university’s  activities.

Responsibilities/Services

The infrastructure Development team is responsible for the interconnectivity of a network devices and systems that are available in the university. Moreover, assuring high availability of services, Integrity and confidentiality of information transaction in a secured manner.  Including protection and management of physical infrastructure assets such as servers, wireless access point, Wireless controllers, Firewalls, Core, distribution and access switches, cable mediums, and other network and communication devices.

  • The infrastructure development unit work strongly on datacenter building and installation which is the heart of ICT services so that most University ICT critical business services will be safe and secured.
  • By Studying the existing university ICT infrastructure and facilities design and propose predictable system, ICT polices, and implement scalable network and system infrastructure expansion, improving capacities and system upgrading and other required configuration works.
  • The team also provides centralized users and computers account management using active directory servers. Moreover it responsible for managing the difference network service servers dedicated to the variety of ICT services & resources to be utilized according to some security guidelines. Provides centralized antivirus protection and prevention of all computers, servers and lab tops that are owned by the universities.

Projects Completed

IDS/ Intelligent Data center Design and Installation

About 90% of the university’s Modular Intelligent Data Center installation is now completed. The university’s data center is just a store or a building that houses computing facilities like servers, core switches, routers, premises and data center firewalls, communication cables and wireless controllers. As well as supporting components like backup storages, UPSs, Power distribution Units, Surveillance cameras, fire suppression facilities, fire and smoke detection devices, and air conditionings. All these data center components make up the core of the university’s information system. These critical data center components required significant supporting systems, including air conditioning/climate control systems, fire suppression/smoke detection, secure entry doors, and identification and raised floors for easy cabling and water damage prevention. This datacenter has all the supporting components to make sure university’s critical information safe and secured.

  • Separate electric power line installation is completed sooner.
  • After electric power installation finished each data center device will plugged into a reliable modular datacenter UPSs,
  • Online backup generator will be ready immediate to the separate electric power installation work accomplished. So that ICT resources including information protected from physical damage caused by electric power problems such as black out, brown out, surges and spikes.
  • Redundant rack mountable air conditioners are already installed and start working.
  • Fire and alarm detectors, fire extinguisher, PDU, UPS installation have been completed now. These data center safety components the fire and smoke detectors enable to make automatic and manual quick responses if something went wrong inside the datacenter rooms.
  • Cabling and raised floors have been made and servers were moved to the new datacenter equipment room.
  •  Video surveillance cameras are installed inside data center rooms and data center corridors.
  • Installation of security doors The secured door locks allow only authenticated persons to be entered into the datacenter rooms.
  • Any pervious data center systems and devices have been migrated correctly with minimum user’s operation innervations.

Within few couple of week’s data center resources uptime and reliability will be maximized so that users’ efficiency can be optimized.

Wired Local Area Network Installation and Expansion

  • Starting from 2006 E.C. the university ICT directorate work hardly on the new and existing network installation, upgrading and optimization works. Now currently almost all the university compounds excluding the instructors resident covered by wire networks.
  • Parallel to the new installation and expansion activities the network optimization project works is completed as a result all previously cascaded and flat networks of the university main and middle campuses which was causing for network performance degradation, information transaction bottle necks and even network troubleshooting and maintenance hassles now are solved.  LAN infrastructure band width upgraded from 1Gbps to 10Gbps which promises the upcoming university centralized automated system that need to be run over the LAN can be accessible, reliability, secured and reachable as the users required.
  • Replaced the cascaded and flat networks by hierarchical & modular network structure (core, distribution, and access switch) moreover main network components such as core and retributions have been made redundant. So that single point of network failure now completely avoided. The entire campus network now group in six distribution sites; Data center, IT, SGS, MC, Tax and SD distribution sites and data center core switches via all the six distributions locations each has  interconnected with 10Gbps fiber cables. Each distribution site has 2 physical distribution switches. And now for each user access switches has 2 alternative physical passes.
  • Next generation firewall which provides protection up to the application layer has been installed. Now to the maximum internal as well as external cyber attack has been defended.
  • Installed central network monitoring tool/Solar winds maximize the efficiency for infrastructure team members’ maintenance, troubleshooting and problem forecasting abilities. Moreover new comers of the staff members will familiar about infrastructure service with minimal on the job trainings. Now most of the team services apart from staff dependencies.

Wireless LAN new and expansion work

  • Now about 142 wireless access points which are controlled by two central wireless controllers. The redundant wireless controller provides 2 great roles the first is avoiding single point of failure and second one is load balancing.  Now every student and trainees dormitory including the new university commonly known as school of diplomacy buildings.  Currently all students and trainees dormitories have wireless network services basically which have no an alternative wired network services. This wireless network service tired to make secured at the maximum by separating the university’s users in their most roles (admin, staff, student and Guest). Even like the wired network pervious problem the wireless devices was made in such a way not manageable by central controllers. But now all the 142 wireless access device installed, rearrange and installed new cable passes to be monitored by the central wireless controllers found at the university data center.

Intranet service

  • Among the university intranet services the beginning of the office 365 e-mail is the one which improves the electronic communication among the compound staffs (managers, colleges, institutions, departments, directorates, teams and even within individuals).

Projects in Progress

  • Some works remaining on the modular Intelligent data center solution
