Abstract

Solid waste management is a major problem in many African cities because most cities are unable to collect and dispose of all wastes generated. The inability of municipal authorities to appropriately collect and dispose of solid waste culminates into water, land and air pollution which poses health risk to human populations and environmental degradation. In the face of inadequate resource mobilization, increasing urbanization and the need to conserve the environment, municipal authorities cannot continue applying conventional solid waste management approaches to effectively improve their environment. Municipal authorities would instead have to shift their attention to better approaches that exploit the potentials of organic waste for development. This paper highlights the potentials of composting solid waste in developing countries. This is against the background that Organic waste recycling; a traditional system used in agriculture in rural areas is uncommon in urban areas, although urban areas have enormous potentials (economic, social and physical) for organic waste recycling.
