Abstract

This study examines the main HRD practices and constraints in international and
indigenous NGOs in Ethiopia. The researchers have employed descriptive type of research. The
research was conducted on convenience and random sampling technique whereby a total of 363
questionnaires are returned from 20 NGOs out of 500 questionnaires (a yield of 72.6%). The
data sources are primary and secondary data while data gathering tools are semi-structured
interview, questionnaire, and observation. The researchers have used a Likert-scale that
represented by Always true (5) … Not at all true (1) to contend data and frequency and
percentage to analyze the data. The overall findings of this study indicate that there is lack of
strategic thinking and focus towards human resource development key parameters such as
training/coaching, career development, performance management, and reward mechanisms. The
study also pointed out that lack of commitment by senior managers in capacitating their staff and
utilizing their potential that, in turn, impedes organizational growth. Therefore, HRD practices
of these NGOs shall be improved through implementing competency-building endeavors,
strengthening the HRD of the organization, supervisory and management staff, enhancing staff
motivation, and creating opportunities for advancement.
