Abstract

Hosanna town, is located in the Southern part of Ethiopia and has a population of
69,957. The existing sanitation facilities and services in the town are very poor and have adverse
effect on residents’ health. Lack of toilet facilities, open defecation, disposal of solid and liquid
wastes in open space, open drainage system and absence of sewer system are the common
sanitary problems in the town. Therefore, this study was designed to investigate the causes of
poor sanitation facilities and services and their impact on the human health and also to assess
the people’s perception towards sanitation issues. Both primary and secondary data were used
in the study. Impact assessments and people’s perception towards sanitation issues were
appraised based on the household survey of 218 sample respondents. The study concludes that
poverty and low income of the majority of the population are major constraints for sanitation
improvement in the town Children below the age of 5 and elders of above 55 years were highly
susceptible to sanitation related diseases. People’s perceptions towards sanitation issues are not
sound and encouraging. Promoting partnerships with domestic private sector and sanitation
education at school level are recommended to the local government.
