Topic: Gender and Leadership
Background: Gaining contemporary knowledge and skills about leadership and people would enable leaders to transform their performance. Thus, this training aims to equip participants to gain skill and knowledge that can be applicable in their workplace. It will also enable participants to understand how gender relations and stereotypes influence performance of male and female leaders and their followers’ perspectives as well.
Objectives: At the end of the training, trainees will be able to
- Explain leadership and its related concepts
- Differentiate Leadership from Management
- Explain the sources of leadership
- Describe the vital qualities leaders should have
- Explain the relationship between gender and leadership
- Elaborate how gender as socially constructed ideology influence leadership styles, approaches and successes of male and female leaders
Content: Definition and concept of leadership; leadership and management; sources of leadership; leadership and power; transformational leadership; leadership styles; leadership competencies (envisioning, planning, integrity, emotional intelligence, team work, empowering, motivation, communication and decision making); gender and leadership nexus- style of leadership, gender socialisation, & gender stereotypes; gendered challenges of leadership; and glass-ceiling effects (contents will be adopted based on organisational context and interest).
