Topic: International and National Legal Instruments of Women’s Rights

Background: Gender inequality and violation of women’s rights have been subjects of international and thereof national legal and normative instruments. Hence, several instruments have been introduced that promote women’s and girls’ rights.  This training will provide insights about evolving international, regional and national legal instruments regarding women’s rights. Participants will gain an overview of various legal frameworks used to address violation of women’s and ensure gender equality in different arenas.

Objectives: At the end of the training, trainees are able to

  • identify main international and regional legal instruments for women’s rights and differentiate the instruments of which Ethiopia is signatory (UDHR, CEDAW, Beijing Platform for Action and Declaration, Sustainable Development Goals and so forth)
  • identify and explain working legal and policy frameworks in Ethiopia in relation to Women’s rights and gender equality (FDRE Constitution, Family Law, Penal Code, Women and Development Package, GTPII and so forth)
  • explain the challenges of filling the gap between de jure rights and de facto rights of women in Ethiopia

Content: Includes- international legal framework for gender equality and women’s rights such as Convention on the Elimination of All forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW); Optional Protocol to the Convention on the Elimination of All forms of Discrimination Against Women; The Beijing Platform for Action and Declaration; The Protocol to the African Charter on Human and People’s Rights on the Rights of Women in Africa; FDRE Constitution; FDRE Family Code; FDRE Criminal Code and others (contents will be adopted based on organisational context and interest).
