Abstract

The rapid growth of urbanization has led to, among other things, growing mobility and demand for transportation. Steadily rising car fleet has been increased congestion, number of accidents and environmental deterioration. Recognizing the potential implications of such development, policy makers and officials in Africa are more or less playing their role. But is found necessary to run ahead to reformulate transport policies with the aim of providing safe, cost-effective and environmental-friendly transport to bring about sustainable socioeconomic development in the Region. In addition, Non-motorized Transport (NMT) like bicycling are mainstream providers of urban mobility. Important urban cycling exists in some parts of the world (China, North West-Europe, parts of Asia, and secondary African cities). Efficient urban NMT creates higher urban mobility at a lower financial and environmental cost. As such, it can be an important instrument to reduce poverty and to enhance sustainable development. Sub-goals to which it can contribute are: increased productivity, better air quality, liability, traffic safety and more equity and participation in public governance. To reduce congestion and accident rate etc. going forward to mass transport like bus rapid transit (BRT) and trolley bus is among the best alternatives. The main objective of this study is to make analysis on Transportation for sustainable socioeconomic development in African Secondary primary cities in the new millennium. This paper there fore, investigates the dimensions and causes of urban transport problems involved such as: traffic congestion, traffic accident and transport pollution, and puts different opportunities and best practices to tackle or minimize the problems. The methodology of the study was more of dependent upon verities of secondary data and interviews.
