Center holds 11th in campus Seminar
Ethiopian Civil Service University Center for Research in Ethics and Integrity held the 11th In-campus Seminar on May 30, 2018 at Hidasse Hall. The seminar was held with a theme “Science and Conscience; Ethics in Experimental and Quasi- Experimental Studies”.
Professor Yalemtsehay Mokonnen the speaker on the seminar thanked and said that she is glad to stand before the respected ECSU staff and students. She said that science is not only about subjects like mathematics, chemistry physics etc. It is something that is applicable in all our life. In her presentation, she also noted that importance of Ethical procedures for advancing scientific researches and courses on research ethics on the curricula of higher learning institutions. Ethics is conducting experiment/ research following standards rules, keeping integrity, moral responsibility of participants and getting consent of the human participants she added.
‘’it is important to be aware of established scientific publishing house, journals and avoid predator journals. Courses on research ethics have to be part of the curricula of higher learning institutions. Ethical boards have to be established’’ She said. Professor Yalemtsehay also recommended that no experiment should be conducted without ethical consideration.
Professor Yalemtsehay Mokonnen obtained her BSC and Masters Degree in Biology from Addis Ababa University where she started her academic career as a lecturer. Then she obtained PhD in Human Physiology from the University of Heidelberg in Germany. After she came back she continued to serve Addis Ababa University and in 2009 she was promoted to the rank of full professorship becoming the first Ethiopian woman to reach that level. She has published over 110 scientific papers in reputable journals. She has presented extensively her research results in national, regional and international scientific and professional meetings and conferences.
Professor Yalemtsehay was also involved in various leadership positions as well. Among which she served as Head of the Biology Department, as Director of Aklilu Lemma Institute of Biology and as Vice President and President of the Biological Society of Ethiopia to name a few. She has won several research grants and fellowships; nationally and internationally.
Finally Dr. Birhanu Belayneh thanked Professor Yalemtsehay Mokonnen for her presentation and handed over a certificate of Appreciation.
