Ethiopian Civil Service University has won the United Nations Public Service Award in category five, which is ¨ Promoting Gender-Responsive Delivery of Public Service¨. The university`s project has been selected from a range of projects from African Region, one of the five regions which the United Nations Public Administration Programme categorized. The process has taken quite some time and the university’s Gender and Development Center has availed all the necessary documents for their consideration, which helped the University win the contest. According to United Nations Public Administration Programme, the United Nations Public Service Awards is the most prestigious international recognition of excellence in public service. It rewards the creative achievements and contributions of public service institutions that lead to a more effective and responsive public administration in countries world wide.
The award will be given in the UN Public Service Day ceremony and forum which will be held from 24-27 June 2013, at Manama, Kingdom of Bahrain.
According to Abay Akemachew, Head of Center for Gender and Development, the Ethiopian Civil Service University has presented three of its initiatives which are designed to enhance the competence of female civil servants. The first initiative is empowering female civil servants through education from emerging regions in alternative admission programme and helping them achieve their goals through different support programmes. These support programmes include, among others, providing different trainings like Time Management, Stress Management, Study Skill, and Communication and Assertiveness skills. The center has also provided experience sharing programme at which female alumnae of the university who came from the emerging regions and hold higher position in the civil service shared their experiences.
Abay also said the competition has passed through three different rounds. They are endorsing the initiatives to the United Nations Public Administration Network, supporting these initiatives with relevant documents and letters , and going through different observation mechanisms which would be done by the UNPAN.
When she was asked what she felt about winning the award Abay said,
¨ It is very encouraging. It is also an assignment to work harder to achieve more results as gender issues in the country don`t reach to the level where it needs to be. ¨
Abay further said the university`s achievement is helpful in building the country`s image.
