ECSU Center for Research in Ethics and Integrity Held Seminar
Ethiopian Civil Service University Center for Research in Ethics and Integrity held its third seminar on “Ethics in Higher Education Teaching and Learning “ on April 21, 2016 at Hidase hall. The University community and invited guests attended the seminar.
Dr Mulugeta Debebe, Vice President for Training and Consultancy welcomed the participants and expressed his honor to have the presenters in the University as speakers.
The speaker of the seminar,Laureate Prof. Tirusew Teferra, Lecturer, College of Education and Behavioral Studies, Addis Ababa University said Ethics starts at home so focus should be given to family. Now a day’s, unethical practices such as plagiarism, missing classes, unethical relationships, absence of transparency, incompetency, improper grading, absenteeism, failure to be punctual which are committed by Instructors, Students and Leadership are increasing in Universities. So integrated intervention among the stakeholders is needed to solve the problem.
The other speaker Dr. AregaYirdaw , CEO, MIDROC Technology Group and President of Unity University said identifying the root causes of unethical behaviours and work for solutions is the best approach to tackle the problems. Dr.Arega pointed out some of the measures taken by Unity University for the prevalence of ethical service delivery( teaching learning).
He finally urged everyone to practice what he/she is preaching the public or students.
Major areas of unethical practices in both public and Private Higher Institutions ranges from placement of students and instructors to misuse of resources, unnecessary intervention of the management on academic issues, absence of transparency, non-participatory leadership, etc., said the third speaker, Ato Endeshaw Legesse, Expert from Higher Education Relevance and Quality Agency.
After the presentation, presenters reacted to the questions and concerns raised by the participants.
Closing the seminar, Ato Birhanu Belayneh vice president for Research and Community Services said that the seminar enables the University community to thoroughly see the different aspects and perspectives of Ethics in Higher Education Institutions.
Finally Ato Birhanu Belayneh thanked the presenters for the time and effort they took to share their thoughts and experiences with the university community and awarded them certificate of participation.
