ECSU Center for Research in Ethics and Integrity Holds Seminar
Ethiopian Civil Service University Center for Research in Ethics and Integrity held the 6th Seminar on “Ethics, Governance and Nation-Building” on November 02, 2016 at Hidasse Hall. The university community, invited guests and scholars attended the seminar.
In his opening speech professor Kwame Charles, from School of Graduate Studies, welcomed Dr. Odomaro Mubangizi, speaker of the seminar and all the participants and invited guests. I called upon you all the participants, to freely participate and share your ideas on this challenging topics professor Kwame Charles added.
Dr. Odomaro Mubangizi has presented an extensive presentation on Ethics, Governance and Nation-Building and expressed the goal of the seminar as a forum that will bring the three contents ethics, governance and nation building together. The sum of these three elements will ensure sustainable development he added. He also explained the issues of Ethics and Governance is as old as humanity and called them “pillars of a nation building activities”.
Citing corruption as one of unethical activities -Dr. Odomaro Mubangizi expressed the importance of broadening the agenda of ethics in research areas. He also said governance is one of the frameworks for addressing the issue of Nation building and system of rational and abstract rules for carrying out functions in formal institutions.
Nation building is not an event but a long cumbersome process that acquired concerned efforts by all stakeholders beginning with the citizen of a given county. It is also a conscious and purposive attempt to bring different people together to think, act and live as if they were one people belonging to one large ethno cultural community Dr. Odomaro Mubangizi said.
Participants of the seminar on their part expressed their pleasure and thanked Dr. Odomaro Mubangizi for his presentation on the contemporary issue in Ethiopia. They also raised the issue of corruption and said whether it is petty or grand, every citizen should have zero tolerance for corruption. The issues of fairness, mechanisms through which corruption can be eradicated from Africa, separation of powers in different bodies to build a nation, the role of citizens in nation building etc have been raised by the participants and Dr. Odomaro Mubangizi gave answers and explanations.
Finally Dr. Almayehu Debeb, Director for Center of Ethics and Integrity, and moderator of the seminar thanked Dr. Odomaro Mubangizi for his presentation and sharing his views and experiences to the university community and awarded him a certificate of participation.
Dr. Odomaro Mubangizi has served as a lecturer at different Universities and Colleges, member of editorial board and editor for various academic journals. Currently he is teaching at the Capuchin Franciscan Institute of Philosophy and Theology in Addis Ababa.
