ECSU Center for Research in Ethics and Integrity Holds Seminar
Ethiopian Civil Service University Center for Research in Ethics and Integrity held the 7th seminar on “Construction Ethics: The Need for Transparency” on May 4, 2017 at Hidasse Hall. The university community and scholars have participated on the seminar.
In his opening speech Dr. Birhanu Belayneh Ethiopian Civil Service University Research and Community Service Vice President welcomed the speaker of the seminar and all the participants. He also mentioned that the Ethiopian Civil Service University has been building the capacity of the civil servants through education, training and consultancy for the last twenty years and has registered remarkable achievements. Recently it has established research and community wing and tried to address the need of the society by conducting research. Being one part of this wing, Center for Research in Ethics and Integrity has conducted seminars on different issues and organized its second seminar in this academic year, Dr. Birhanu said. We have now the opportunity to discus on the issue of construction ethics and gain invaluable input for our further research activities. This seminar is a forum that we learn more from the experienced presenter that helps us to fulfill our mission successfully, Dr. Birhanu added.
On the seminar Engineer Tesfaye yalew has presented an extensive presentation on Construction Ethics: The Need for Transparency. In his presentation he pointed out that the construction sector is a capital intensive sector in developing countries like Ethiopia, it assumes the lion’s share of the national budget. According to him due to its heavily technical in nature and other related issues, the construction sector is highly susceptible to mismanagement and corruption. Even though the government of Ethiopia put has the legal framework, there is a huge gap on the implementation of the framework at grass root level Engineer Tesfaye explained. In the presentation he also gave a detailed explanation on the establishment of Construction Sector Transparency Initiative- Ethiopia (CoST- Ethiopia), its purpose, objectives and the activities it has made since its establishment.
Participants of the seminar on their part expressed their pleasure and thanked Engineer Tesfaye Yalew for his informative presentation on Construction Sector Transparency Initiative- Ethiopia. They also raised different questions and forwarded their comments on accessibility and future strategies and programs of the initiative and discussed on the ethical issues on the construction sector.
Finally Dr. Birhanu Belayneh thanked Engineer Tesfaye for his presentation and sharing his views and experiences to the university community and awarded him a certificate of participation.
Engineer Tesfaye Yalew has received his B.Sc and M.Sc in Civil Engineering from Addis Ababa University and Post Graduate Diploma in Urban Environmental Planning and Management from Institute of Housing and Urban Development Studies, Rotterdam, Netherlands. He thought at Addis Abeba University and Ethiopian Civil Service University and worked in different ministries offices and international organizations assuming different positions.
