ECSU Community Celebrates 6th Nations, Nationalities and Peoples’ Day
The Ethiopian Civil Service University Community colorfully celebrated the 6th Nations, Nationalities and Peoples Day with the theme "Our Constitution towards Diversity, Unity and Renaissance." on November 28, 2011. The Celebration was held at the Institute ofUrban Development Studies auditorium.
Speaking at the celebration, Dr. Hailemichael Abera, President of the University, said
" such kinds of public holiday are also called “constitutions day”, and many countries celebrate them once a year and they address every issue related to the constitution: national, regional, institutional, individual and governmental. "
Since it came into being about 20 years ago, the Ethiopian constitution has solved our long-existing political, economic and social problems and put in place a new democratic system, he said.
Thanks to the Ethiopian nations, nationalities and peoples struggle, Dr. Hailemichael added, the new Ethiopia is solving its problems step by step and becoming a model for peace, equality, development, diversity, beauty, democracy and unity. The FDRE constitution provides legal basis for human and democratic rights of nations, nationalities and peoples, as well as for a democratic system. Therefore it is progressive, modern, developmental and democratic, he said.
Furthermore, he said, the struggle for democracy has brought new democratic system, offered the right to self-administration and ensured the will of nations and nationalities to live in unity and harmony. Dr. Hailemichael finally urged the university community to understand the constitution and educate others about its contents as part of efforts underway to put Ethiopia among the middle income countries. He said we need to internalize what the constitution really means, its importance and benefits, and work diligently to implement our mission to build true civil servants free from corruption and rent -seeking attitudes.
During the celebration, a symposium was also held in which four papers were presented on “The Struggles to Bring Constitutional System”; “The Benefits of Emerging Regions from the Constitution”; “The Significance of the Constitution in the Economic and Social Aspects”; and “The Benefits of Females and the Youth from the Constitution” presented respectively by Ato Zerihun Yimer, Dr. Mohammod Abdulahi, Dr. Teshome Adugna and W/ro Abay Akemachew .
Students drawn from different departments entertained the university community with colorful cultural music and dancing from different regions of the country.
