ECSU Ethics Liaison Directorate Conducts Consultative Meeting
Ethiopian Civil Service University Ethics Liaison Directorate and Federal Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission conducted awareness creation consultative meeting for the University`s management and academic and support services heads. Dr. Hailemichael Aberra, president of Ethiopian Civil Service University chaired the meeting.
Ato Abebe Zewde Acting Director for the Coordination of Ethics Infrastructure Directorate in Federal Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission said in the occasion that the commission in collaboration with the Ministry of Education has established anti-corruption movement in each public university, a strategy to root out corruption. According to Ato Abebe, the main reason for establishment of the anti-corruption movement is the prevalence of wide spread corrupt practices and unethical behavior observed in administrative as well as in academic services. He raised a range of issues that brought the threats that corruption pose to the nation in to light.
Following the establishment of new universities and huge investment in infrastructure in the old universities, a lot of concerns are raised with regards to purchase of materials, service delivery and buildings. With regard to service delivery inappropriate student teacher relations, sexual assault, improper time usage, groupism are among the most recurring incidents in the universities which we should work hard to tackle, said Ato Abebe.
Ato Gebre Tibebu, Director for the Ethics Liaison Directorate of the University recalled that the University established a forum which comprises of the University president, the four vice presidents, Ethics Liaison Directorate, Center for Gender and Development, Students` Council, Students` Ethics and Anti-Corruption Club, Internal Audit, Institutional planning and Assessment, Reform and Good Governance and Campus Guard and Security. According to Ato Gebre, the objective of today`s meeting is to find ways as to how each section of the University mobilize its staff in the fight against corruption and un ethical service delivery and sustain the movement.
Dr Hailemichael Aberra, President of the University in conclusion said that teaching the actors to abide by the law is good; but establishing code of conducts and code of ethics is important. Empowering women and bringing them to leadership posts will also be equally important to improve principled service delivery as women are less corrupt, more stable and less rent seeking. He also said we will incorporate the issues raised in today`s meetings in our plans and act accordingly.
