ECSU Holds the 6th National Conference
Ethiopian Civil Service University Research and Publication Coordination Office organized the 6th National Conference with a theme “Public Sector Transformation and Development” from May 11 to 12, 2021 at Abay Hall. At the conference ESCU scholars, Researchers and invited guests from Federal Ministries, Regional States and City Administrations participated.
In his keynote address the guest of honor Dr. Temesgen Burka, Director with Ministerial Portfolio of Centre for Democracy, Board Chairman of Ethiopian Civil Service University said one of the areas in which universities compete internationally is their priority in research and publishing. Working for a better position in this regard should be given the proper attention and needs to be a daily agenda of our universities, Dr. Temesgen added. “Country’s development is unthinkable without scientific research works. Research should also focus on basic methodology, innovative thinking and practice. Therefore, I strongly hope that the selected research findings presented at this conference will contribute to the overall prosperity and contribution to the development of the country. I also expect that the research works will be published and used for our country's development endeavors”, Dr. Temesgen underscored.
Professor Fikre Dessalegn, Ethiopian Civil Service University President, in his opening speech recalled that ECSU is the sole public Higher Education Institution in the country entrusted with the unique mission of building the capacity of public sector and its contribution to the human capital development in its specialized education program, short term training and consultancy since its establishment. He also noted that ECSU is gradually evolving as a university of choice by the public servants despite the low intake capacity when compared to the candidates applied to join the university. ECSU, by its Research and Community Service Wing, is undertaking problem solving researches that focus towards policy intervention in various public-sector reform initiatives and development agenda of the country. It has also taken important steps that lay foundation for smooth running of its research functions by establishing two research centers that predominantly conduct researches, and Research Resource Centre. It is an encouraging start that the university has executed and executing 14 big research projects funded with 60.6 million-birr budget from federal Ministries and Addis Ababa City bureaus in addition to the budget allocated from the government treasures, Professor Fikre added.
He finally assured the stakeholders of the ECSU’s commitment to meet their evolving demands and expectations and called up on them to work together and engage with the university in its effect to realize the mission of the university.
Dr. Alemayehu Debebe, Vice President for Research and Community Service, on his part welcomed the participants and said that ECSU is working with firm commitment to contribute positively for the betterment of research works undertaken by scholars by establishing two independent research centers, building the capacity of researchers in various ways, establishing publishing house, and establishing a Research Resource Center. He also noted that the numbers of research papers presented at such conferences are increasing. Fifty research papers were collected from higher education and training institutions, among these seventeen were done by ECSU scholars. Passing through rigorous reviewing process forty papers are now presented for this conference, Dr. Alemayehu noted. He also wished a fruitful and successful stay at the two days conference.
Dr. Ojullu Okock ,Gambela University President and ECSU alumni , in his keynote address entitled “Ensuring Peace and Peaceful Coexistence” indicated that peaceful coexistence is a fundamental element for sustainable development and sustainable development is possible if and only if there is a peaceful coexistence between people.
On the conference thirty research papers carried out by ECSU staff members and other higher education and training institutions were presented and the participants discussed on them.
