ECSU HOLDS INTERNATIONAL SEMINAR
Ethiopian Civil Service University College of Leadership and Governance organized a seminar on a theme “the Role of Leadership on Statehood and Nation Building” on May 11/2018 at Ellile Internationa Hotel. The seminar aimed at bringing common understanding on the role of leadership in nation building processes by rasing cases of four selected countries: Somalia, Azerbaijan, Turkey and Ethiopia.
Dr. Atakilti Hagos, Dean of College of Leadership and Governance in his key note speech said that the University has been building capacities in the public sector for the last 23 years in specialized educational programs, research, training, consultancy and community services. He recalled that the public sector was incapacitated and had acute shortage of trained personnel at the establishment of the University. But with a firm commitment of the University leadership and the community, the University managed to contribute its share in the transformation drive of the country. Dr. Atikilt show cased that many of the current and former leaders at federal, regional and local levels, including ministers, state ministers, members of parliament, directors in federal and regional agencies, mayors and so on, have graduated at ECSU either in undergraduate or postgraduate programs.
Dr.Atikil thanked the presenters and moderators for making the seminar a success. He also thanked H.E. Ambasador Elman and his staff, for his notable effort in strengthening our partnerships and for Sponsoring this event.
Ambassader Wondimu Assaminew while presenting Somalia`s case said, Somalia had all the ingredients to become strong and Prosperous nation after independent. But due to secterian sentment of the then leaders, they failed to be so. He in conclusion said nation fails when leaders fail. Genuin concession, fair representation of all in government power including Military, avoiding clan based loyality by the military are some of the recommndation made by Ambassader Wondimu.
H.E. Ambassador Elman Abdullayevon, Ambassador of Azerbaijan to Ethiopia said in his presentation that multi culturallism and the ideology of Azerbajainism helped the nation to grow fast and fight distabilization efforts which were sponsored by out side foreces. Azerbajan is decribed as unstopable nation after 1994.
H.E. Ambassador Fatih Ulusoy, Turkish Ambassador to Ethiopia also raised the roles played by previous leaders of Turkey. He mentioned the roles of the leaders From Ataturk, who is known as the founder of Republic of Turkey to the incumbat president Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, in the transformation of todays Turkey
Dr. Assefa feseha speaks on the role of leadership in Statehood and Nation Building the case of Ethiopia. He said leaders can serve as bridges between communities. He raised what President Obama played in trying to reconnect the American and Cuban people. Dr.Feseha mentioned that nation building is not ending process, and good leaders establish good instituion which pave the way for rule of law, democratization and prosperity.
After handling over certeficate of appriciation for the presenters, Dr. Berhanu Belayneh, Vice President for Research and Community Serrvices said that how we shape the purpose of power is very important. Leadership is system consisting of three important moving parts, each of which is equally important. They are: the leader, folowers and context. " So the seminar showed us how these parts are interrelated in statehood and nation building. He also said that the University will use the issues raised in research and consulatncy works. He finally urged the participating ambassadors, diplomats and representatives of international organizations to work with the University and support its vission of becoming a center of excellence in capacity building.
