ECSU Holds National Stakeholders Consultative Meeting
Ethiopian Civil Service University held one day National Consultative Meeting with Stakeholders on Urban Planning Preparation and Its Implementation on March 23, 2018 at Hidasse Hall. The program was organized by Center for Urban Management and Transformation Training and Consultancy and stakeholders from Regional governments and Addis Ababa and Diredawa City Administration, Ministry of Urban Development and Housing participated in the meeting.
Professor Fikre Dessalegn, President of Ethiopian Civil Service University welcomed the participant. Professor Fikre said so as to make them development hubs, attention should be given to the newly emerging towns in different regions in the form of preparing proper master plan and developing their excution capacity. If we do so, it will be possible to alleviate the various socio-economic, infrastructural and other problems prevailing in these towns. This consultative meeting has these objectives in the agenda and we believe it contributes a lot in the efforts to modernize cities and urban areas by equiping them with a knowledge on standard urban planning preparation and its implementation, Professor Fikre underscored. He also mentioned that ECSU is discharging its responsibility of building the capacity of the public sector by delivering short term training and consultancy services by its Training and Consultancy Division in addition to the formal long term education in specialized programs in the areas of urban planning and others.
The representative of the Federal Ministry for Urban Development and Housing on his part thanked ECSU for organizing the meeting and requested the university to further strengthen its effort by preparing consecutive consultation workshops with the stakeholders, professionals in the area of urban planning and all other concerned bodies. Such kinds of meetings enable us to incorporate the ideas of scholars in preparation of urban planning for the newly emerging urban centers and readjustment master plans for the old towns, he added.
On the program two papers entitled “Constructive Meeting with Urban Sector Actors in Ethiopia on Urban Planning and Implementation” and “Urban Plan Implementation Challenges” were presented by Dr. Wubshet Birhanu for a discussion and the house thoroughly discussed on the issues related with Urban Planning and Updating plans, Plan Implementation, Land Management, Challenges in Implementation of Urban Plans.
Participants on their part expressed their pleasure for taking part on the meeting and appreciated ECSU for its successful organization of the program. They also pointed out that the program created a good opportunity for them to communicate with different stakeholders and share ideas and take scholarly advices for their future activities.
