ECSU President Urges Newly Joining Female Students to Become Role Models
President of ECSU Dr. Hailemichael Aberra, urged female students that are newly joining the university to become role models to other women civil servants, their families and children.The president made the remark at an event organized on November 27, 2013 to welcome female students who came from the four emerging regions, Afar, Benishagul Gumuz, Gambella and Somali, who are beneficiaries of the ECSU special admission program that is aimed at building the capacity of women civil servants in the four states.
Dr. Hailemichael said
although there are a number of articles in the Ethiopian constitution that are meant to protect the rights of women, special support should be given to women to build their capacity for them to be more meaningful.
And accordingly, he said, ECSU is providing special education opportunities to women civil servants.
State Minster of Federal Affairs, Umed Ubong, on his part said
as the women have lots of responsibilities they may face challenges while studying at the university and they need to be strong and finish their study successfully despite the many challenges they face.
A member of the House of People Representatives’ Women, Children and Youth standing Committee, Etenesh Feleke, said although the number of female students in higher education institutions is increasing a lot remains to be done. She told the students that they got a golden opportunity. She called upon them not to miss the chance by dropping out.
Representative of the Ministry of Women, Children and Youth Affairs, Tesfayenesh Yilma, on her part said in the four emerging states there are few women in leadership position and she appreciated ECSU for launching the special education program.
Uda Kedir, a representative of the second year Development Management students, who are beneficiaries of the special admission program, on the occasion thanked the university for it has been providing a lot of support to them.
Currently, 110 female students who came from the four emerging states are studying at ECSU. Sixty two of them joined the university this academic year.
