ECSU Staff Continued Assessment Meetings
Ethiopian Civil Service University Academic and Administrative staff continued their assessment meetings for the third consecutive phase. The participants this time are leaders and all staff members of Academic, Academic Support, Administrative Support, and Management Support Divisions. The meeting conducted for three days and an in depth discussions held on plan performances of the academic year.
The staff assessed their last year BSC plan performances and elicit the strong and week sides of their sections and report that to the staff through their representatives. Some institutes’ efforts to organize public lectures to their students, widely given scholarship chances to the academic staff, prevalence of participatory planning, staff enhancement to implement the reforms, rewarding best performers from teaching staff and long serving administrative staff, general understanding in the objectives of the BSC, efforts made on BSC follow up and assessment, trainings given by CAPD on student centered teaching approach were raised as strong sides of the plan performances.
During the discussion, the staff also raised the following points as weak sides of the plan period. The points are, lack of professional integrity from some instructors’ side, luck of interest in research from both the students’ and the instructors’ side, Plagiarism and lack of quality of masters thesis, research centralized ness, failure to identify who should get tutorials and failure to begin it in time, Shortage of classrooms for tutorials, lack of clarity on teachers performance appraisal form, failure to deliver original degrees in time and others. They also complained on mix of roles in IPA and CAPD.
Dr. Hailemichael Abera, president of the University, Dr. Samson Kassahun, academic vice president and Dr.Mekonnen Jemaneh, vice president for administration and development has given clarifications to the points raised during the discussions
Dr. Hailemichael in his response said when students fill performance appraisal of instructors, they should be clear of its objectives and the criterion should be clearly set Dr.Hailemichael also said we should think of ways of providing original diplomas and degrees to students in shortest time possible. Concerning the classroom shortages, he said we should optimally use classrooms for different purposes .Dr.Hailemichael finally expressed his appreciation on the staff’s unreserved participation and suggestions during the discussions.
