Ethiopian Civil Service University 2012 Graduation Ceremony Held
Graduation is a special and significant day for graduates: it is a day to celebrate the achievement of years of hard work with families and friends, and it is a day that will be remembered for the rest of one's life.
It is time of the year when hundred of thousands of students are graduating in different fields of studies from different universities and colleges in Ethiopia. The Ethiopian Civil Service University is one of the higher learning institutions in Ethiopia which has played asignificant and positive role in producing educated manpower particularly civil servants in the country. Accordingly, the university graduated 636 students with Bachelor and Masters Degree in regular, extension and distance programmes on July 14, 2012.
Three hundred forty eight of them graduated with Masters Degrees in Development Economics, Urban Management, Public Financial Management, Law, Federalism and Local Governance and two hundred eighty eight students graduated with Bachelor degrees in fields of Development Management, Tax and Customs Administration, Urban Planning, Public financial Management and Public Management.
In the graduation ceremony held at the University's Institute of Urban Development Studies campus, H.E Ato Kassa Tekleberhan, Speaker of the House of Federation, Delegates from Somaliland, president of the University, the two vice presidents, institutes directors, academicand administrative department heads and other academic staff of the University and families of the graduates were in attendance.
Speaking on the occasion H.E Kassa Tekleberhan said that
" since Ethiopia has established the federal system that gives full recognition to all nations and nationalities to have direct participation and equal beneficiaries, different policies and strategies are designed and have done a lot on sustainable peace and democracy building, making the public more advantageous by escalating economic and social development. "
In this regard we also administered remarkable growth and change.
Ato Kassa added, to strengthen the existing federal and decentralized system in the country,a number of higher learning institutions were established. These institutions are striving to solve capacity related problems in the civil service by building its capacity and improving performance at both federal and regional level. He further said the Ethiopian Civil Service University has greatly contributed to building the knowledge, skill and attitude of the public sector.
Dr.Hailemichael Abera, President of the University, on his part said
" the government designed the Growth and Transformation Plan and put into practice to elevate Ethiopia to middle income country and meet the millennium development goals."
He added the university with respect to its mission has designed strategic pillars and objectives and is striving to meet these objectives. Accordingly, the university offered various education and training programmes which are related to the country's vision and has the competence to build the civil service with the necessary knowledge, skill and attitude. Besides, in its research and consultancy services, the university has been engaged in activities that can improve the human resources, leadership capacity, organizational structure, and service delivery of the civil service system in Ethiopia, said Dr. Hailemichael.
In a speech he made on the occasion, Director General of Civil Service Institute of Somaliland, Mr. Mohammed Mihileh said
"if I were to travel back in time, it would be hard for me to imagine the massive economic, political and cultural changes that have been taken place over the past three decades. These changes have been as intense as they have been extensive."
He further said these changes have fundamentally transformed Ethiopia and Somaliland, as well as the relation between the two countries. The two governments have fundamental relationship on creating prosperity and development across the region.
Mr. Mohammed noted that the Ethiopian Civil Service University is a close friend of Somaliland with special link to the Somaliland Civil Service Institute. The two institutions have collaborated for the past four years in bringing civil servants from Somaliland to the University. He also said "I hope this collaboration will work for the better of both: Ethiopia and Somaliland as friends, brothers and good neighbors and will continue and other institutions will follow the suite."
Later, gold medalists were bestowed their medals at the hands of the Guest of Honor H.E. Kassa Tekleberhan. Following the Gold Medalists, female students with great distinctions from each institutes awarded.
Finally, the graduate students conducted swearing of an oath to serve the public.
