Ethiopian urbanization review book rolled out
The Ministry of Urban Development and Housing said that though Ethiopia is still an agrarian country, rapid urbanization due to rural-urban migration and population growth, the possibility of transforming the economy and the demographic landscape is much higher.
Speaking at the launching of the Ethiopian Urbanization Review prepared by Civil Service University in collaboration with the World Bank on Thursday, Minister Mekuria Haile said urbanization is an opportunity as long as it allows the chance to promote a dynamic self-sustaining urbanization process which is part of the overall economic structural transformation.
The expansion of the service sector and industries due to urbanization paves way for job creation and increase citizens income, status, facilitate flow of investment; speed up poverty reduction.
However, according to Mekuria, the rapid urban development could pose a challenge by itself. It needs proper budget allocation across multiple sectors including provision of public utilities, housing, water and sewerage, environmental protection and strong rural-urban linkage that can bring the possibility of mutual benefit.
