Green Club to Commence Action
Ethiopian Civil Service University Green Club officially started up its activity in the presence of all founding members of the club in a ceremony held on March 19, 2019 at Hidasse Hall. The club was established by volunteers from the university community who are enthusiastic to protect the environment.
In his opening remarks, Ethiopian Civil Service University President,Professor Fikre Dessalegn said environmental protection is a global issue that was not paid a proper attention. The consequence of being negligence to the environmental issues causes devastating and worse effect in every one day to day life. Taking this into consideration, ECSU green club will contribute its share at national level by planting trees in line with the green economy principles that country follows. It also works to make its compound and environs clean and green. For this a base line survey has been conducted by the committee organized by the volunteers. All members of the club have a moral obligation to make the goal of the club realistic, Professor Fikre noted.
On the program Dr. Azeb Asefa, consultant for Center for Cross-cutting Issues Training and Consultancy, presented the problems related to climate change and environmental conditions in Ethiopia and the importance of environmental protection. In her presentation Dr. Azeb said that environmental issues are problems created by human being activities. Due to improper utilizations of natural resources and mismanagement of climate issues the global world suffers from pollution of air and water, land degradation, loss of biodiversity climate change and extreme weather.
Ethiopia is one of the counties that have legal and policy framework to manage environmental protection. But its implementation at ground level has not been satisfactory. For this lack of organizational accountability, individuals concern and lower level of environmental literacy have their own negative impact. These factors need to be reversed and every citizen has an obligation to contribute its share for the protection of the environment, Dr. Azeb noted.
According to Dr. Azeb the club focuses on actions such as proper resource utilization, waste management, conservation and management of natural resources rehabilitation and greening and environmental sustainability.
On the program the founding members of the club discussed on the draft rules and regulation of the club and approved the draft document. They also planted seedlings around the university compound.
