Public Lecture Held
Ethiopian Civil Service University School of Diplomacy and International Relations organized a public lecture on two selected topics at Hidasse Hall on Monday, June 6, 2016.
At the opening remarks Amb.Dr. Markos Tekle, Director of School of Diplomacy and International Relations thanked the speaker and the participants of the lecture.
Prof. Charles Chatterjee, from University of London and Warwick University Barrister in England and Wales has given the lecture on: “Foreign Direct Investment in Africa and the Management of Related Disputes: Focus on International Arbitration;” and “Migration Crisis and International Legal Framework “. He presented his lecture briefly by raising practical examples.
Prof. Charles in the occasion said that he came to exchange ideas not teach. Prof. Charles also said, when dealing with transnational companies, one has to have a skill to negotiate and know what his country needs. According to Prof. Charles real development comes from indigenous investments. It is also important to think about human resource development benefits that the transnational companies offer when a deal is made with the host nation as knowledge transfer is one of the big investments, Prof. Charles added.
The lecture was chaired by Amb.Dr. Markos Tekle, Director for School of Diplomacy and International Relations. The Participants of the lecture have raised various issues like:- how can the issues of foreign direct investment and the issues of the host country be incorporated in the treaties , can the negotiation between private investors and the country be equal, and others. Prof. Charles, in turn, has added brief explanation to the concerns of the participants.
Professor Charles Chatterjee, LLM (Cambridge) LLM, PhD (London) Barrister is an Associate Research Fellow of the Institute of Advanced Legal Studies, University of London. He is a Visiting Professor in the Centre for Commercial Law Studies, Queen Mary University of London and Director of the Centre for Natural Resources Law and Management at a university in England and Visiting Academic at University of Warwick. He is the Co-Director of London Academy of Diplomacy
