Staff Development Workshop Conducted
Ethiopian Civil Service University Center for Academic and Professional Development organized a half day workshop on Learner- Centered Teaching Approach to Institute of Tax and Customs Administration instructors on April 20, 2011 at Development Learning Center. The workshop is part of the Staff Development Workshop Series designed by the center.
The objectives of the workshop is to discuss how and why learner centered approach can be fostered, learn about the varieties and ways of implementing learner centered practices, gain an understanding of how to objectively assess the learner centered status of courses and gain an understanding of what incremental steps teaching staff can take to improve courses.
Opening the workshop Ato Ayneabeba Andualem ,Director of Center for Academic and Professional Development said
" great efforts have been exerted to render the teaching -learning approaches and methods learner-centered and practical , the assessment methods continuous and the curricula relevant to Ethiopia’s needs. "
He also said that students support programmes and quality enhancement mechanisms have been put in place.
Honorable Dr. Hailemichael Abera, President of the University presented an overview of Learner-Centered Teaching from the many years of his teaching experience since he joined Addis Ababa University as an instructor. He said
" people used to think that if a teacher is teaching, the learners are learning. However, learners learn when they are involved in the process, he said. Students learn better by being involved; so we must put the learners at the center of the activities."
Dr. Dribssa Abate, Ato Eshetie Abebe and Ato Assefa Wubalem also gave a short lecture on learner centered approaches, methods and techniques, and continuous assessment.
According to Ato Ayneabeba Andualem, Director of Center for Academic and Professional Development the participants are given assignments to see the actual teaching practices in their respective departments in relation to the ideas reflected during the workshop.
