Students of ECSU Donate Blood
Students of ECSU donated blood to the Ethiopian Red Cross Society National Blood Bank Service on Wednesday March 21, 2013.The event was organized by Center for Gender and Development and External and Public Relations Department in connection to the marking of World Women`s Day(March 8).
One of the blood donors, Tewanay Lisanework, a student in the Development Management Department, said, “ I am giving blood to save the lives of other people. I donated blood some years ago when I was a high school student. I have learnt from my personal experience how important blood is to save lives. When my mother was ill, there was no one to donate blood. I wasn’t in a position to donate blood at that time. Someone who is not our relative donated blood and her life was prolonged by six months. My mother would have died if she hadn’t got the blood at that time. You have a great feeling of satisfaction after giving your blood.”
Kidist Kassuhun, a student from Tax Administration and Customs Department on her partsaid,
“I decided to donate blood because I know I can help save life. I am donating blood for the first time in my life.”
Another first timer is Lemessa Atewu, who is at ECSU for a short term training. “When I saw the banner that says, ‘Together we can save lives’. I wanted to donate blood. My brother’s daughter, who is five years old, suffers from heart disease and she needs blood every now and then. Today after I donated blood, I felt that I did something to her. And I’m happy.”
Another short term trainee named Tamene Asratie, said,
“Donating blood is a humanitarian activity. And it is pleasing to involve in humanitarian activity. I know that people die because of lack of blood. I saw the announcement to donate blood just today and here I am.”
Thirty students donated their blood to the Ethiopian Red Cross Society National Blood Bank Service. The blood donation opportunity was created by the ECSU Center Gender and Development. The Center plans to create similar opportunity for the staff of ECSU in the near future.
